Why Is Pure Oud So Expensive?

If you've ever wondered why pure oud oil commands such a high price, you're not alone. Oud — also known as agarwood or dehn al oud — is widely regarded as one of the most expensive natural ingredients in the world. Here's why.

1. Oud Is Incredibly Rare

Oud oil is extracted from the resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree. But here's the key: not every Aquilaria tree produces oud. The resin only forms when the tree becomes infected with a specific mould (Phialophora parasitica). In the wild, this happens to fewer than 2% of trees — making naturally infected agarwood extraordinarily rare.

2. It Takes Decades to Form

The finest oud resin takes 20–30 years or more to develop inside the tree. You cannot rush nature. This long maturation period means supply is always limited, and older, more resinous wood commands premium prices.

3. Extraction Is Labour-Intensive

Producing pure oud oil requires steam distillation of the resinous wood — a process that can take days and yields very small quantities of oil. It can take hundreds of kilograms of agarwood chips to produce just one litre of pure oud oil.

4. Wild Agarwood Is Endangered

Due to centuries of harvesting, wild Aquilaria trees are now listed as endangered under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). This legal protection further restricts supply and drives up the price of genuine wild oud.

5. High Global Demand

Oud has been prized for centuries across the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia for use in perfumery, religious ceremonies, and traditional medicine. As global demand grows — particularly in Western luxury markets — prices continue to rise.

6. Counterfeiting Is Widespread

Because genuine pure oud oil is so valuable, the market is flooded with synthetic substitutes and diluted products. Sourcing, testing, and guaranteeing 100% pure oud oil requires significant expertise and investment — which is reflected in the price of authentic products.

Is Pure Oud Worth the Price?

For those who have experienced genuine pure oud oil, the answer is almost always yes. A single drop lasts 8–12 hours on skin. The complexity, depth, and longevity of real oud is unmatched by any synthetic alternative.

At Pure Oud UK, every oil we sell is 100% pure, authentically sourced agarwood oud oil — no synthetics, no dilution, no compromise. Explore our full range of pure oud oils.
