What is Oud Oil? The World's Most Precious Fragrance Explained

Oud oil — also known as agarwood oil — is one of the most prized and expensive fragrances in the world. Often referred to as 'liquid gold', pure oud oil can fetch thousands of pounds per kilogram, making it more valuable than many precious metals. But what exactly is oud, and why is it so special?

What is Oud Oil?

Oud oil is extracted from the resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, a species native to Southeast Asia and parts of South Asia. When the Aquilaria tree becomes infected with a specific type of mould (Phialophora parasitica), it produces a dark, fragrant resin as a defence mechanism. This resin-saturated wood is what we call agarwood — and the oil distilled from it is oud.

Not all Aquilaria trees produce agarwood. In fact, only around 7% of trees in the wild develop the infection naturally, which is one of the key reasons oud is so rare and valuable.

Why is Oud So Expensive?

Several factors contribute to the high price of pure oud oil:

  • Rarity: Wild agarwood-producing trees are increasingly scarce due to overharvesting and deforestation.
  • Time: It can take decades for a tree to produce enough resin to be worth harvesting.
  • Extraction: The distillation process is labour-intensive and requires significant expertise.
  • Yield: It takes a large quantity of agarwood to produce a small amount of pure oud oil.

What Does Oud Smell Like?

Pure oud oil has a complex, multi-layered scent profile that varies depending on its origin. Generally, you can expect notes of:

  • Warm, rich wood
  • Earthy, smoky undertones
  • Sweet, balsamic hints
  • Subtle floral or spicy accents

The scent of oud evolves on the skin over time, making it a truly unique fragrance experience.

The Cultural Significance of Oud

Oud has been used for centuries across the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia in religious ceremonies, traditional medicine, and as a luxury perfume. In many Arab cultures, burning agarwood chips (bakhoor) to scent homes and clothing is a deeply rooted tradition. Oud is also mentioned in ancient texts, including the Bible and the Vedas, as a sacred and precious substance.

Pure Oud vs Synthetic Oud

Many commercial fragrances labelled as 'oud' contain synthetic substitutes rather than genuine oud oil. Pure oud oil, like the oils available at Pure Oud UK, is 100% natural and free from synthetic additives — offering an authentic, uncompromised fragrance experience.
